Overview

How we treat emotional dysregulation

Some people feel emotions more intensely and take longer to come back down. That isn't a character flaw, and it responds well to skills training. Our PHP and IOP teach dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills and give you several days a week to practice them with people working on the same things. This includes adults with borderline personality disorder or BPD traits.

Emotions shift quickly and feel impossible to control

Relationships feel intense, unstable, or keep ending in conflict

You act on urges in the moment and regret it later

You often feel empty or unsure of who you are

Who it helps

When it's time for more structure

Weekly therapy helps, but skills stick faster with frequent practice. A structured program makes sense when emotional swings are disrupting work, relationships, or safety. If you are in danger right now, call or text 988.

FAQ

Emotional regulation treatment questions

Do I need a BPD diagnosis?

No. Many people struggle with intense emotions without meeting criteria for any personality disorder. Our assessment focuses on what's getting in your way and what level of care fits.

Is this a full DBT program?

We teach DBT skills within PHP and IOP. Comprehensive DBT is a separate model that adds features such as between-session phone coaching. If you need it after discharge, we'll help you find it.

Can my family be involved?

Yes, with your consent. Family sessions can help the people close to you understand the skills you're learning and how to support them.

Will my insurance cover it?

Most commercial plans cover PHP and IOP when they are medically necessary. We verify your benefits and tell you what to expect to owe before you start. How insurance works at Novaris

What if I'm in crisis right now?

PHP and IOP are not emergency services. Call or text 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency department.
